Chlorine is the most widely used water disinfectant, but its effectiveness depends heavily on pH. At pH 7.0, approximately 75% of the chlorine is in the form of hypochlorous acid (HOCl) — the active disinfectant form. At pH 8.0, this drops to about 25%. So a pool or water treatment system with adequate chlorine dose but high pH may actually have very poor disinfection effectiveness.
ORP cuts through this complexity. It measures the actual disinfecting power of the water directly — regardless of which disinfectant is being used or what the pH is. An ORP of 650 mV or above ensures effective disinfection against bacteria and viruses. This is why WHO and most water quality standards specify ORP rather than chlorine dose as the disinfection criterion.

ORP is measured using an ORP electrode — a noble metal sensing element (usually platinum or gold) combined with a reference electrode, immersed directly in the liquid. The electrode generates a millivolt potential relative to the reference that reflects the oxidising or reducing power of the solution. An ORP meter or controller reads this millivolt signal and displays it on the front panel display.
No calibration is required using buffer solutions as with pH electrodes. The ORP electrode is verified using a standard ORP reference solution. Like pH electrodes, ORP electrodes require regular cleaning and periodic replacement.
