A common misconception in electroplating is that plating time alone determines thickness. In reality, plating thickness is directly proportional to the total electrical charge passed through the bath — measured in ampere-hours (AH). If the rectifier voltage or bath resistance fluctuates, the current changes, and the same time period produces different thicknesses in different batches.
By measuring and controlling the total AH rather than time, the plating operator ensures that every batch receives exactly the same amount of electrical charge — and therefore exactly the same plating thickness — regardless of what happened to the voltage or current during the cycle. This is why every serious electroplating operation uses an ampere hour meter, not just a timer.
