A tachometer is basically an instrument that may measure the rotation speed of any object that rotates, say a churner or a motor etc. A simple model of tachometer may just need a dial and timer or needle to indicate the number of rotations per minute or hour. However as the industrial and commercial processes have become complex, the demand for more complex tachometers is also risen which has led to development of digital tachometers. The tachometers have been developed using extensive digital technology and electronic systems which may record high speed rotations and show the readings in a recordable plus digitized format. They also have memories of recording the readings. Thus, the tachometers are necessary industrial equipment per se. The tachometers as suggested by their function find inevitable use in the automotive and automobile industry while secondary uses include their use for medical purposes as well.
There are various types of tachometers used in various places as per the requirement. Each has different application depending upon the compels nature of the machine it is to be used for. There is voltage based or frequency type tachometers generally used. However another recent development includes the development of laser tachometers. These are discussed briefly in the following paragraphs-
Frequency type calculates the amount of pluses for a rotating field. High amount of accuracy is demanded in these types of Tachometers.
Laser tachometers use laser technology to calculate rotations when direct contact with instruments is not possible. A beam of light used a laser is used to record the rotations without actually coming in contact with the apparatus. However they may be difficult to set up because the light needs to be integrated into the system properly.
Voltage based tachometers are the mostly used instruments. They record the pluses by using voltage or electricity as a source. The DC generator operates on this principal and is most common. Because of their simple way of operation and set up, they are preferred over the other two types which are complex than this type.
Tachometers, though available in 3 main types are also segrated feature wise. For instance, one could divide Tachometer into panel mounted or portable each of them having specific varieties but all of them mostly using the voltage based source. Panel mounted tachometers using a pro, digital tachometers, digital tachometers with 2 alarm limits are the type in the former while portable includes types such as digital , digital with contact range , digital with non contact( uses laser).
The automobile industry uses various types of tachometers for various purposes and they are made of many complex mechanisms as well. Today, the automobile cannot function without the use ofTachometer. Companies such as countronics.com manufacture and sell quality and standard devices they may be used for industrial purpose.
